Cleveland Cyclewerks Discontinued In India: Production Stopped Across Country
American motorcycle manufacturer Cleveland Cyclewerks has discontinued operations in India. Reports suggest that the company's manufacturing facility at Pune has been non-operational for eight months. There is no official statement from the company as is.
According to the Financial Express, the primary reasons for a total failure of Cleveland Cyclewerks' India operations are prices and lack of mandatory safety features. In addition, the company was using Chinese manufactured parts to assemble their motorcycles in India.
Cleveland Cyclewerks debuted in India at the Auto Expo 2018, and eventually launched two motorcycles for the Indian market - the Ace and the Misfit. The Ace was built as a neo-retro scrambler, while the Misfit was built as a cafe racer. Both motorcycles were brought in as CKD units, and assembled at the company's workspace at Pune.
Both the Ace and the Misfit featured a 229 cc, air-cooled engine that produced 15.4bhp of power and 16Nm of torque — way lower than the segment leaders. In addition, the Ace and the Misfit were launched at Rs 2.23 lakh upwards (ex-showroom, India).
The company opened its first dealership at Mumbai with the aim of opening 100 additional dealerships by the end of 2019. However, poor sales led to a closure, and reports suggest that employees were asked to resign at short notice.
Cleveland Cyclewerks is a privately owned motorcycle manufacturing company that designs and assembles small displacement cafe racers and bobbers. The company depends on Taiwan for most of its components, and uses Honda engines.
The company's aim is to bridge the gap in the motorcycle industry and offer inexpensive, stylish motorcycles that riders find technologically accessible, easy to customize, and easy to maintain.
Thoughts About Cleveland Cyclewerks Shutting Shop In India
Well, that bridge didn't work very well, did it? The lads at Cleveland Cyclewerks were trying to do what our very own Rizwan Bhai could do to any any Honda motorcycle for roughly one-third the price. We're not surprised that the company shut shop in India; and not entirely sure why they thought this would work in this country. We're the Indian consumer man! Period.
