Bajaj recently unveiled its all-new electric Chetak in India. The new Bajaj electric Chetak is said to go on sale in the Indian market by early-2020. Once introduced in the Indian market, the electric Chetak will rival the likes of the Ather 450 electric scooter.
Similar to the Ather 450, the Bajaj electric Chetak will be launched in India in a phase-wise manner. The electric scooter will first be introduced in Pune, before going on sale in Bangalore. This phase-wise launch will also allow Bajaj to study the market before its country-wide introduction at a later stage.
Here is a brief comparison between the Ather 450 and the upcoming Bajaj electric Chetak in terms of design, features and specification; among others.
The Bajaj electric Chetak and the Ather 450 are styled completely opposite to each other. While the Bajaj electric Chetak is offered with a classic retro design, reminiscent of the old scooter. The Ather 450, on the other hand, comes with a modern look, with a sharp design and a sporty appeal.
Both electric scooters, however, offer a clean and simplistic design, with very little body graphics. The Ather 450 is available in a single white paint scheme, with a touch of black on the front apron. The electric Chetak, on the other hand, will be offered with multiple single-tone colour options.
The Bajaj electric Chetak also features large seats and a relatively bigger footboard. This along with the retro design of the scooter will appeal to more traditional scooter riders. While the Ather 450 will attract a younger audience in the market.
The Ather 450 is offered with a host of features and equipment. This includes LED lighting all around such as the headlights, DRLs, indicators and tail lamps. It also comes with a large touchscreen instrument cluster with multiple functionalities.
The Ather 450 also comes with Bluetooth connectivity, which adds features such as live vehicle tracking, vehicle diagnostics, multiple riding modes, charging station location and GPS navigation; among others.
The Bajaj electric Chetak comparatively offers fewer features. While it does receive LED lighting all around, along with multiple riding modes (expected). It does miss out on a comprehensive touchscreen instrument cluster. The digital screen on the Bajaj electric Chetak is more basic with just the minimal information being displayed.
The Ather 450 comes powered by a 5.4kW BLDC electric motor, with a peak torque of 20.5Nm. The electric motor is mated to a high-capacity 2.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack offering a maximum range of 75km on a single charge.
Ather also offers its electric scooter with fast-charging technology, capable of 80% charge in 1km/min. Ather also claims a top speed of 80km/h while sprinting from 0 - 40km/h in just 3.9 seconds.
The Bajaj electric Chetak, on the other hand, is expected to receive a similar 4.5kw electric motor. However, the company is yet to announce any technical specifications of their upcoming electric scooter. Bajaj though has informed that the electric Chetak will have a range of around 80km on a single charge.
More details regarding the specifications of the Bajaj electric Chetak will be announced closer to its launch, sometime in January 2020.
Availability & Prices
The Ather 450 was first launched in Bangalore in 2018. The company initially priced the Ather 450 at Rs 1.25 lakh. However, with the recent drop in GST rates on electric vehicles, the Ather 450 is now available with a price tag of Rs 1.12 lakh. All prices are on-road Bangalore.
Apart from Bangalore,Ather Energy recently started operations in Chennai as well. The company has started deliveries of the 450 electric scooter. The company will soon start operating in Pune, Mumbai and Delhi as well, before selling countrywide.
The Bajaj electric scooter once launched in the market will initially be available only in Pune. The company will then expand to Bangalore. This phase-wise launch of the electric Chetak will allow Bajaj to learn the market requirements, ahead of its country-wide launch at a later stage.
In terms of pricing, we expect Bajaj to price the electric Chetak in the same range as the Ather 450. That is, somewhere in the range of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.10 lakh, on-road.
Thoughts On The Bajaj Electric Chetak Vs Ather 450
The two electric scooters are very different from each other in terms of styling. However, both electric scooters are premium offerings in the segment, offered with a host of features and equipment. An exact decision of which is the better option is saved for a later stage, once the electric Chetak is launched in the country.
