Ather 340 Electric Scooter Discontinued: Here’s Why
Ather Energy, the Bangalore based electric scooter manufacturer has discontinued the production of their lower-spec 340 electric scooter from the market. The Ather 340 was the lower-spec variant in their electric scooter lineup, also consisting of the 450.
The Ather 340 was launched alongside the higher-spec 450. Both scooters were available in Bangalore and Chennai. However, Ather released a statement confirming the discontinuation of the 340 electric scooter.
According to Ather, 99% of their customers opted for the higher-spec 450 and hence they will be discontinuing the Ather 340 and focus on scaling up the production of the more popular 450 and other future products.
The Ather 340 comes with the same BLDC (Brushless DC Motor) as the 450. However, the 340 is powered by a smaller1.92kWh battery pack. This battery pack offers a maximum range of 60km on a single charge.
The Ather 340 also uses a lower-spec 4.4kW electric motor, which offers a top speed of 70km/h and a 0 - 40km/h acceleration time of 5.1 seconds.
Comparing this to the Ather 450, the higher-spec variant comes with a larger battery pack offering a higher range of around 75km on a single charge. It also comes with a more powerful electric motor capable of a top speed of 88km/h and a 0 - 40km/h acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds.
At the time of launch, the Ather 340 was also priced slightly lower at Rs 1.09 lakh, compared to the 450 which was almost Rs 15,000 costlier at Rs 1.24 lakh. Both prices are on-road (Bangalore).
However, Ather recently reduced the prices of the two electric scooters, when the government cut down the GST rates on EVs to 5%.
The Ather 340 looks identical to the higher-spec 450 and also comes with all the features. It also shares the same underpinnings, bodywork and design. However, the Ather 340 does miss out on the green rim stickers, which is the only visual differentiating factor between the two electric scooters.
Thoughts On The Ather 340 Electric Scooter Being Discontinued
The Ather 340 electric scooter was launched alongside the 450 last year. The Ather 340 was a more affordable and less powerful offering from the brand. However, with most customers prefer to go for the higher-spec 450, Ather has made a good decision to discontinue the non-performer and concentrate its resources on the 450.
