Even though the engine is completely new, the bore and stroke are identical to that of the 300cc unit which powers the Mahindra Mojo. Classic Legends has shared that the new Jawa motorcycle will be powered by a 293cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder DOHC (Dual Over-Head Cam) engine.

The engine has been developed in Italy and will be made in India too. It develops 27bhp and 28Nm of torque, and comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Even while being a single cylinder, the engineers have developed the engine in such a way that it produces an exhaust note, similar to that of the original late-20th-century models.

As mentioned before, the engine shares some properties with the Mahindra Mojo UT300 and XT 300 variants. The UT 300 makes 23bhp and 25Nm while the XT 300 is good for 27bhp and 30Nm. Both motorcycles have been regardedas one of the best tourers at its price point.

Classic Legends has also tried their best to retain the design of the original Jawa engine; evident from the pictures above. It was quite a challenge since the original engines were two-stroke units while the new ones are obviously four-stroke (two-strokes engines have been banned long back due to stringent emission norms, in case you never knew).

Two-stroke and four-stroke engines differ by a good extent in terms of construction (especially in the position of the intake and exhaust ports) and Jawa Motorcycles has surely succeeded in making the new engine, somewhat identical to the old one. The same principle is expected to be followed on the overall design of the new Jawa model.

Thoughts On Jawa Motorcycles In India

It was in 1960 when Ideal Jawa Ltd. introduced Jawa motorcycles to the budding Indian two-wheeler market. Since then, the motorcycle slowly started to make a cult following across the country and in 1972, the motorcycles were sold under the name, Yezdi. Many purists and enthusiasts are waiting to get their hands on the modern iteration of a Jawa and we expect it to be launched by the end of 2018.
