India's Second Largest Scooter Manufacturer Revealed — Honda's New Tormenter?
Hero MotoCorp's sales nearly halved, while TVS Motor volumes sustained even after the ban on high-value currencies in India and overtook Hero to become the second largest scooter manufacturer in India
TVS Motor Company Ltd. has pipped Hero MotoCorp to the second position in the Indian scooter market, which it lost about a year ago.

As per Business Line, Hero MotoCorp's sales nearly halved to 121,144 units, down by 49 percent from 235,465 units. TVS Motor sustained volumes despite note ban with scooter sales of 188,609 units, down just 3 percent from 194,056 units in the same period a year ago.

The total sales for the 10-month period of this fiscal, TVS' sales stood at 677,172 units, while Hero's volumes were at 658,255 units. Compared to the previous year, Hero's sales fell by 742 units compared to TVS Motor.

Aniruddha Haldar, Vice-President, Marketing-Scooters, TVS Motor said "The relative impact of demonetization across players could be a function of the quantum of urban vs. rural and the number of days of stock,"

He further added "We maintain a very healthy 30-day stock. Our urban and rural exposure is also well balanced out. So, changes in that exposure could be a possible reason for the variation in the degree of impact. But as far the general demand is concerned, November and December were difficult months. But it started correcting it from January."

Hero MotoCorp had managed to increase its market share to about 14 percent five quarters ago, till the demonetization dented its sales.

TVS Motor has recently launched the 2017 Wego with BS-IV engine along with two new colours, and an all-new scooter is expected to be launched next year.
