Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso won the thrilling Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring race track. Dovizioso fended off Marc Marquez in a battle which went on to the final corner of the race.
Dovizioso registered his and Ducati's third victory of the 2017 MotoGP season. Austrian GP witnessed a thrilling battle between Dovizioso and Marquez who fought it out till the last corner of the race. But the Italian rider held his nerve to take the victory by a narrow margin of 0.176 seconds.
Marquez started the race in pole position and took the early lead, but in the later phase the Honda rider struggled to match the straight line speed of the Ducati and was passed by Jorge Lorenzo.
But Lorenzo's pace began to fade, and Marquez took things in control. Dovizioso then overhauled his teammate and ultimately took the race lead. The Honda-Ducati duo swapped positions several times.
It all came down to the wire as Dovizioso and Marquez were fighting for the victory on the last lap. The Spanish rider tried his best till the last corner but had to settle for second place. His teammate Dani Pedrosa finished third fighting his way up the grid.
Lorenzo managed to finish fourth with his pace diminishing in the second half of the race. Tech3 Yamaha rider Johann Zarco finished in the fourth position. Yamaha riders Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi took sixth and seventh respectively after an off-track incident at Turn 1.
Aspar Ducati rider Alvaro Bautista was in lonely eight position. Loris Baz and KTM wildcard rider Mika Kallio rounded off the top ten finishers. Marquez leads the driver's championship ahead of Dovizioso.
Austrian GP was all about the battle between Honda and Ducati. The Italian team gained the upper hand due to its straight line speed. Dovizioso was impressive to outpace championship leader Marquez, but he had to fight hard for his third victory of the season.
