Dorna To Start Electric Motorcycle Race Series — The MotoGP Of Electric Bikes?
The electric race motorcycles would be made by a single manufacturer, and it is reported that two brands have already expressed interest to provide race machines.
Dorna Sports, S.L., the commercial rights holder for motorcycling sport of MotoGP and World Superbike Championships, is planning to start its race series for electric motorcycles. Carmelo Ezpeleta, Dorna Sports boss, confirmed this while talking to a Spanish publication, Motociclismo.

The Dorna electric motorcycle racing series is expected to begin by 2019 and would pick up where the now defunct FIM e-Power Championship left off. Ezpeleta also outlined a plan that would see a five-round format and will operate as a support class to the Grand Prix weekend.

The electric race motorcycles would be made by a single manufacturer, and it is reported that two brands have already expressed interest to provide race machines. The organizer will also look to existing teams and riders in the current GP paddock to fill the entries.

Ezpeleta also revealed how he sees the race format working. He suggested 14 MotoGP riders and teams would fill most of the grid, along with four fastest Moto2 riders. It is believed for the bikes to have a 10-lap racing format, with speed up to 125 mph.

As of now, the best venue to showcase electric motorcycles is the Isle of Man TT, which is dominated by the entries from Team Mugen. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb seems to be a budding venue for electric motorcycles as well.
