Desi Dominar Is A Hit For Bajaj In Foreign Markets

Bajaj Dominar export sales more than the domestic market.

Bajaj Auto entered the mid-sized engine segment in India with the launch of the Dominar 400. The home-grown bike maker was looking to penetrate into the space dominated by Royal Enfield with the introduction of the Dominar.

The Bajaj Dominar 400 is priced at Rs 1.4 lakh (ex-showroom) and the ABS variant priced at Rs 1.55 lakh, making it one of the most affordable bikes in the segment.

Bajaj aimed at selling 10,000 units of the Dominar every month; however, the going has been difficult for the bike maker with just 2,000 units of the Dominar being sold in a month. In September 2017, Bajaj sold 4,500 units of the Dominar including both domestic and export sales.

With 2,000 being sold in India, 2,500 units sales of the Dominar came from international markets. The company exports the Bajaj Dominar to countries in Latin America and South East Asia. Recently, Bajaj began shipping the Dominar 400 to Australia and plans to expand its market to Europe as well.

While Royal Enfield has been selling bikes in the segment for decades, Bajaj is a new entrant, and it is just a matter of time before it can find a foothold in the much coveted mid-sized engine segment.

The Bajaj Dominar 400 boasts of features which Royal Enfield is yet to equip its motorcycles. Features such as ABS, large front disc brakes, fully digital instrument console among others set the Dominar 400 apart from Royal Enfield motorcycles.

The Dominar 400's engine is derived from the KTM 390 family but sports Bajaj's triple spark technology and revised gear ratios. The 373cc engine of the Dominar produces 34.5bhp and 35Nm of torque.
