TVS Receives Patent For Semi AMT Gearbox For Motorcycles
TVS Motors has been applying for interesting patents in recent times. Now the Indian-based manufacturer has patented an all-new semi-automatic transmission. They have christened this technology as the SMT or Semi-automated Manual Transmission.
Previously, TVS Motors had introduced the Jive motorcycle in the Indian market. The Jive from TVS was launched in 2010 and was equipped with a clutchless gearbox. All-new SMT from TVS is an extension of the clutchless gearbox.
SMT by TVS will utilise buttons to change gears instead of using the foot for gear changes. An electric motor will be used to change gear when the rider pushes the button. TVS Motors claims that their SMT system could be used for three-wheelers as well.
It is currently unclear as to when TVS Motors will put the SMT into production models. As of now only a patent for the SMT technology has been received. TVS Motors is likely to offer the SMT in existing models as a convenience option.
Honda Motorcycles currently have developed and is using a similar technology. Both Africa Twin and VFR1200 models have gear changing options via a button. This system is fully automatic and more complex than TVS Motors SMT system.
