Mahindra Plans To Buy BSA Or Norton Controlling Stake

By Ajinkya

Mahindra & Mahindra has a vast empire which forays into various sectors. In Indian as well as international markets, Mahindra is popularly known for their four-wheelers, tractors, and trucks. Surprisingly, they have not gained popularity in the two-wheeler category.

Recent reports suggest that Mahindra is looking to purchase a controlling stake in a classic British motorcycle manufacturer. The Indian-based manufacturer is planning on acquiring either BSA or Norton.

Norton is most likely to be Mahindra's first choice as it has already been resurrected. Sales have not been in abundance, however, this is the aspect where Mahindra can assist Norton. Bringing back the Norton brand in India as well in international markets will re-kindle yesteryear memories.

BSA on the flipside only exists as an engineering firm and would not help Mahindra immediately. Much more efforts would be required to bring back the glory days that was experienced by BSA. Both Norton and BSA have a rich heritage in the motorcycling industry.

The Indian manufacturer plans to take on Royal Enfield in the Indian market. We believe if Mahindra plans on acquiring BSA or Norton, they should rather compete with Triumph and its Bonneville range. Modern classic bikes have gained popularity in recent times in both India as well as international markets.
