Yamaha Ray Z Wins India Design Mark Award

Yamaha is known to produce bikes that look fast and edgy. The tuning fork company is also known for its performance-focused bikes. When they talked about their intentions of venturing into the Indian scooter segment, people were skeptical about their offerings. However, they did not disappoint and gave us two sharp-looking automatic scooters in the Ray and Ray-Z.

The Ray-Z is the sportier version of the two and was recently awarded the India Design Mark title from the India Design Council.

Present at the event was Masaki Asano, Managing Director, Yamaha Motor India Sales, who said, "Our scooter Ray-Z has indeed been received very positively and our designing and engineering team have created a product which met our customer needs and fitted the Indian market. This award not just realizes our efforts but also motivates us to continue creating new, innovative and enriching products."

The Ray-Z sports a single-cylinder 113cc, air cooled engine. It generates 8.1 Nm of peak torque, along with 7.1 PS. Yamaha have provided the automatic scooter with a V-belt transmission and a dry centrifugal clutch. It has a competitive price tag of INR 47,735 (ex-showroom Delhi).

Proud about winning the India Design Mark award, Roy Kurian, Vice President - Sales & Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd commented, "We entered the Indian scooter category in 2012, beginning with the Ray, designed for young women, which was followed by the Ray-Z in 2013, targeted at young men."

He also said, "The response that we have been receiving for Ray and Ray-Z are indeed most positive and encouraging. Both sold approximately 150,000 units by end 2013, thanks to the stylish design and ease of use. We understand the needs of our customers and therefore pay great attention to details in our products in terms of styling and design."
