Vespa 946 Confirmed For India; Coming In Q4
When Piaggio said it would introduced new, more expensive scooters in India, in the near future, during the launch of the 125VX, we never in our wildest dreams imagined that it had the Vespa 946 in mind.
Vespa 946 is the new top of the line scooter which first revealed as the Vespa Quarantasei Concept at the 2011 EICMA and in production guise during last year's EICMA. The 946 is a handmade scooter which is sold at a huge premium over its regular models even in international markets. You could say the Vespa 946 is the Mercedes Benz equivalent of SLS AMG.

Vespa 946 is a unique scooter that has a contemporary yet retro design. It still retains the classic front leg guard design in the front and the wasp belly rear end. But is fitted with a unique single piece seat.

Vespa 946 is in fact a retake on the 1945 Vespa MP6 prototype .

Vespa 946 is powered by a 125cc engine that are similar to the one powering the 125LX sold in India. There is also a more powerful 150cc engine on offer.

The 125cc engine delivers 11.6 HP and 10.6 Nm of peak torque, while the 150cc unit delivers 13 HP and 11.7 Nm torque.

Up for pre-order now in Europe, the 946 is priced at a staggering 9,000 Euros across Europe, which at present conversion rates comes up to more than INR 7 lakhs.

This does not necessarily mean this mother of all premium automatic scooters will be sold for that jaw dropping price. For India the price is more likely to be toned down to about a couple of lakhs, which is still a whole lot more than what Indians are used to paying for scooters.

According to Mr Ravi Chopra, Managing Director, Piaggio India, who spoke to Business Standard, Vespa 946 is currently undergoing homologation process at ARAI and will be ready in a few months time. India launch is expected by March 2014.
