Triumph Will Not Build Motorcycles In India

The arrival of Triumph Motorcycles in India was cheered by enthusiasts and the latest news will definitely be a disappointment. Triumph had previously stated it would be assembling CKD kits of motorcycles such as the Bonneville, Street Triple 675, Daytona 675 and the Speed Triple 1050 in India.
Now all these bikes will be launched in India as CBUs taking their prices much higher than expected. Triumph is now planning to import these bikes from its plant in Thailand.
Prices of Triumph Motorcycles in India will definitely go up if these bikes are imported as CBUs. Initial estimates on the prices of Triumph motorcycles in India was starting at about INR 6 lakhs for the Bonneville. But the same bike's price will increase by at least INR 2 lakhs if its sold through the CBU route.
Similarly all the other Triumph Motorcycles will cost higher. Many enthusiasts will consider the bikes to be very expensive as there are similar and even higher powered bikes within the same price range.
There is a slight silver lining in the story. High powered bikes from Triumph such as the Triumph Speed Triple, the Tiger 800XC, the Rocket III and the Thunderbird Storm could be available at competitive prices in 2014 thanks to the proposal to reduce duty on CBU bikes powered by engine displacements above 800cc to 0%.
