Top Best 200cc - 250cc Bikes In India; Power & Mileage Comparison
Back during the mid-2000s bikers in India suffered from a lack a choice if we wanted to go for a motorcycle with a displacement over 200cc. The Pulsars and Karizmas were the only easily accessible 'performance' bikes over 150cc. Meanwhile, the humble Royal Enfield cruisers were the only decent choice when it came to low-cost large displacement bikes.

Fast forward to post 2010 and the motorcycle scene in India has changed for the better. We have listed the top 5 bikes from the 200cc-250cc category and have done a quick comparison of mileage, top speed, performance numbers and price. Take a look!

Bajaj Pulsar 220F
Price: Rs 84,055 (Ex-showroom, Delhi)
Average Mileage: 45 kmplFuel Tank: 15-litresDisplacement: 220cc
Power: 21.05 horsepower & 19.12 Nm torque
Top speed: Over 135 km/hAlso Read: KTM Motorcycles Prices Increase After GST

At one point in time, the Pulsar 220F was the ‘fastest Indian' made motorcycle. Despite sporting an outdated carburettor based fuel delivery system, the Pulsar 220F outperforms its arch rival, Karizma ZMR, which has a fuel injected system. Having said that, the Pulsar 220F is now outdated and plays second fiddle to the advanced Pulsar 200NS.

Hero MotoCorp Karizma ZMR
Price: Rs 1,04,150 lakh (ex-showroom)
Average Mileage: 40 kmpl
Fuel tank: 16-litres
Displacement: 223cc
Power: 17.6 horsepower and 18.35 Nm torque
Top speed: Over 130 km/h

The Karizma ZMR, the fully faired upgrade to the Karizma R Sports made an entry in a big way in Sept 2009. Its 'sports bike' styling is one of its major plus points, which is a hit among those who prefer it over similarly priced non-faired bikes. In terms of performance, it falls ever so slightly short of Pulsar 220F, but it beats the latter with its superior handling and touring capabilities. The ZMR's comfortably broad seats and large fuel tank makes it an ideal budget tourer.

Bajaj Pulsar 200NS
Price: Rs 85,706 (ex-showroom)
Average Mileage: Over 35 kmpl
Fuel tank: 12-litres
Displacement: 199.5cc
Power: 23.52 horsepower and 18.3 Nm
Top speed: 135 km/h

The most advanced bike on offer by Bajaj (until the Pulsar 375 rears its head), the Pulsar 200NS uses a detuned version of the KTM Duke 200's engine. It thrills and excites, but also sticks to its core, which is being frugal in terms of fuel usage. The bikes scores high in the styling department, having been designed under then Bajaj design lead, Edgar Heinrich, a former and current BMW Motorrad design head. If KTM Duke 200 does not come within your budget bracket, but still prefer similar performance, the 200NS is the answer.

KTM Duke 200
Price: Rs 1.5 lakhs (on-road)
Average Mileage: Around 30 kmpl
Fuel tank: 10.5-litres
Displacement: 199.5cc
Power: 25 horsepower and 19.2 Nm torque
Top Speed: Over 135 km/h

The smallest KTM on offer in India is a pocket rocket. This excitable performance machine has all the basic ingredients that you would want from your first ‘fun' bike. Upright riding position, quick bursts of power, ideal for city traffic and amazing performance if you decide to take it to a track. The Duke 200 is perfect for weekend rides, but its small fuel tank would make it painful during long rides.

Yamaha FZ 25
Price: Rs 1,19,335
Average Mileage: 43 kmpl
Fuel Tank: 14-litres
Displacement: 249cc
Power: 20.6 horsepower and 20Nm torque
Top Speed: Over 135km/h

Yamaha's naked quarter litre motorcycle sports more matured performance compared to its rivals. The FZ 25 is a perfect city commuter with a handful of torque to deal with the urban traffic. The bike can also perform well on highways for those weekend rides. Super refined engine makes it a breeze to ride.

Honda CBR250R
Price: Starting price for Non-ABS model: Rs 1,73,714 (On-road)
Starting price with ABS: INR 2,04,274 (On-road)
Average Mileage: 25-30 kmpl
Fuel tank: 13-litres
Displacement: 249.6cc,
Power: 26 horsepower and 22.9 Nm torque
Top speed: Over 140 km/h

Post the departure of Ninja 250, the CBR250R is the only fully faired quarter-litre Japanese motorcycle that you can buy in India. What works for the CBR250R is the incredibly refined Honda engine. There's also an ABS variant, which will come in handy if you are a rookie rider, but be prepared to pay more for it. On paper, the CBR250R offers performance that is similar to the Duke 200but costs considerably more. The motorcycle is also heavier than the Duke 200. Nevertheless, it does have a few plus points such as an engine that does not heat up as much as the Duke's at lower revs.

Verdict
If price and mileage are not concerns for you, the bikes you need to choose between would be the KTM Duke 200 and Honda CBR250R. If you like to spend a little less and also want to get better fuel economy the Pulsar 200NS should be your best choice. The Pulsar 220F is the bike that offers the highest mileage and the cheapest, but it belongs to an older generation of bikes and could very well be replaced altogether by Bajaj in the near future. The Karizma ZMR is a good choice if you want a faired bike for a lakh. However, the ZMR is soon going to be replaced by a new gen model, so it is better to wait a few months.
