Honda Dream Neo, the company's cheapest bike in India, launched recently is meant to be a game changer. Honda is on a role, which recently moved up from being India's third largest motorcycle manufacturer to the second. After dislodging Bajaj, the company's next target is its erstwhile partner, Hero.
Replacing Hero will not be an easy task, which currently holds the distinction of being not just India's number one bike maker, but also the World's. The success of Hero's extremely popular brand Splendor is well known and the only way to take it on is by using the same strategy. So, will the Honda Dream Neo be able to steal Hero's thunder.
That task will be performed by Honda's recently launched Honda Dream Neo. Honda Dream Neo's key selling point has to be its low starting price, which is Rs. 43,150 and goes up to Rs. 47,240. In comparison, Hero Splendor, which is offered in three variants, Plus, NXG and Pro, starts at Rs. 42,300 and goes up till Rs. 50,700 for Super Splendor (which we will not consider here since its is a 125cc model). In terms of pricing Honda Dream Neo is on par with the Splendor. However, it should be noted that Honda Dream Neo is powered by a 109cc engine, against Splendor's 97.2cc engine.
Speaking about fuel economy, Honda Dream Neo is again as good or perhaps even better than the Splendor. Honda claims a mileage of 74 kmpl for Honda Dream Neo. Splendor on the other hand delivers in the range of 65-70 kmpl.
So, has Honda done enough to turn the Honda Dream Neo into the next Splendor. Perhaps not. While the Honda Dream Neo, at least on paper, looks as good as the Splendor, it still lacks that special something to make it stand apart and to catch the buyer's imagination. Hero has a strong and loyal customer base, which trusts the brand's reliability. Honda needs to build up that image to be actually be able to beat the Splendor.
Now, Hero also offers an unmatched 5 years warranty on all its products, which goes against Honda Dream Neo success. At the end of the day, Honda Dream Neo has the potential to become a successful model for Honda, but not one that will bring down Hero. Not yet. What are your thoughts about the Dream Neo.
