Hero MotoCorp Develops New Engines B/W 100-250cc

Research and development is a critical part of any automobile manufacturing company, an aspect of growth Hero MotoCorp did not have worry too much about when it was called Hero Honda, with the Japanese auto giant as its partner.

The real challenge arose with the departure of Honda and its emergence as Hero's biggest rival. Now, Hero MotoCorp had to really get its head down and invest in R&D if it still wanted to remain at the top of its game. Until now the world's largest two wheeler manufacturer has continued to use its existing, Honda developed technology, but that will change in the near future and Hero says its ready.

The company has developed three new engines with its own capabilities, a 100cc, a 110cc and a 250cc engine, TOI reports. "We have fired three new engines, and we have done this ourselves," Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO of Hero MotoCorp, told TOI.

According to Hero, the new engines perform better than existing ones and are said to offer higher fuel efficiency than the current gen engines. The 110cc engines will start powering the existing line of commuter bikes from the second half of 2014, according to Munjal. The 100cc engine, meanwhile, is being specifically developed for Nigeria.

What interests us most is the 250cc engine. The new quarter liter engine will find its place in the Karizma ZMR replacement. With a new engine and a new look, the bike will practically be a brand new model.

Since the company now owns 49 percent stake in Erik Buell Racing (EBR), we hope the new bike will feature inputs from the North American racing team, both in terms of technology and design. Imagine the effect an EBR badged Karizma would have on the Indian market. At the very least it will certainly do better than its present Karizma lineup, which itself is not bad.
