Hero Workers Demand Huge Pay Hike, No Strike

Hero MotoCorp
Hero MotoCorp, the country's leading two wheeler manufacturer is facing labour troubles that are similar to what India's best selling carmaker Maruti Suzuki in 2012. Hero MotoCorp's workers at its plants in Gurgaon, Haryana are demanding increased wages by up to Rs.18,000 over the next three years and are on silent protest.

The demand is nearly three times the amount Hero MotoCorp has offered to workers on recent discussions on a new wage settlement agreement. There are nearly 1,200 permanent workers in Hero MotoCorp's Gurgaon plant who are represented by the Hero MotoCorp Workers Union (HMCWU).

The workers are wearing badges and are attending work. They are also not taking tea and snacks being offered by the company in an effort to add pressure on the management. The workers have stated that they would not go on a strike or bring about a slowdown in production.

The workers have been holding negotiations with company management since Augusr 2012 and are hopeful their demands will be met. HMCWU President Kawalpreet Singh has ruled out going on a strike and said the workers were not satisfied with the company's offer of a pay hike of Rs.6,500.

The union will consider other protest options only if the management does not heed to their demands. Hero MotoCorp has stated that the company had always given priority to the welfare of its workers and would continue to hold talks with workers in an amicable and friendly atmosphere.
