Emission Norms For Two Wheelers In India To Be Revised In 2015
The Government of India will bring into effect revised emission norms for two wheelers from 2015 onwards. This in term will also make scooters and motorcycles more expensive as manufacturers will be required to make improvements to comply with the new norms.
Speaking to ET, a senior government official informed that after careful scrutiny the concerned department have decided upon a new set of emission standards which are unlike those followed by EU or other world bodies. The new standards will cut down emissions by about a quarter and will bring about a significant reduction in emissions of all sorts.

To achieve the new emission goals manufacturers will need to make improvements to engine, after treatment devices and control evaporative emission. The latter is the small amount of fuel which evaporates directly from the engine and the fuel tank connector. Under the new norms this will also be taken into consideration, which means two wheeler manufacturers will have to develop new methods and improve existing ones to reduce the amount of fuel which evaporates.
The additional cost of improvements will be passed on to buyers who might have to spend about Rs 1500 for commuter bikes and as much as Rs 10,000 in case of high performance motorcycles.

Under the present BSIII emission norms vehicles are allowed to emit 1 g/km of carbon monoxide and 1 g/km of hydrocarbons & nitrogen oxides. Emission norms are revised roughly about every five years in India and is crucial in controlling the level of harmful gases in the atmosphere as the number of vehicles on-road increases everyday.
Hero MotoCorp is one manufacturer which already seems to have prepared for the yet to be implemented emission standard changes. The world's largest two wheeler manufacturer will launch a range of two wheeler with fuel saving technology next year, including the new Splendor with Start/Stop technology and the new HF Deluxe ECO.
