BMW Concept Ninety: A Modern Retro Sports Bike
BMW Motorrad proves retro can be as appealing as any modern sports bike. Meet the Concept Ninety, a bike based on the R90S, that will turn even a non believer. BMW Concept Ninety, first announced last year at the EICMA, honours the R90S on its 40th anniversary and is part of BMW Motorrad's 90th anniversary celebration.
BMW Concept Ninety is the work of BMW Motorrad Design studio in collaboration with custom bike builder Roland Sands Designs. The Concept Ninety takes the iconic R90S sports bike's style, but features modern influences. The basic shape, the Daytona Orange colour and the fairing covering the headlights are seen in the Concept Ninety. However, the R90S' large halogen bulb has made way for LED bulbs. The instrument panel consists of two analog dials for the speedometer and tachometer, with the addition of a digital display. The Concept Ninety also gets modern tech like ABS.
Roland Sands Designs' unique touch can be recognised here as well. RSD has used bespoke components to make some of the bike's parts including the exhaust pipes and the mostly blacked out BMW air-cooled flat-twin boxer engine, except for the shiny chrome cover.
"It was important for me to translate the special statement made by the BMW R 90 S into the present through the use of unique parts - employing emotional design and cutting - edge technology," says Roland Sands. "Everything just fits together perfectly: the BMW technology, the BMW heritage and our custom parts complement each other beautifully," he added.
BMW Concept Ninety is currently on display at the 2013 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este You can enjoy beautifully shot images of the bike and a short video documentary in the gallery below.
