Aprilia 250cc Bike Planned For India?

In recent months we have heard news about many notable international motorcycle brands being interested in introducing a new quarter liter bike model for the Indian market. Now, yet another name has joined that list.

According to a report published by MotorBeam, the site has gained knowledge from its source about the Italian automobile manufacturer Piaggio's plans to introduce a new 250cc bike for Indian enthusiasts.

For those who might not be aware of it, Piaggio is the owner of the well known and successful motorcycle brand, Aprilia. At present Aprilia does not have a direct presence in India at all, despite its parent company having a decent position in the scooter and the light commercial vehicles market.

Aprilia, on the other hand, is not a stranger to the world of quarter liter bikes. The sports bike maker is a nine time 250cc category Grand Prix winner and the manufacturer also has a premium 125cc model in the form of the four stroke RS4 125.

MotorBeam speculates, all Piaggio would have to do is combine two bored versions of RS4 125cc engines as a V-twin, similar to what KTM has done with its Duke 200. While the RS4 125 is a premium bike, with styling cues taken from Aprilia's flagship RSV4 liter bike. A 250cc model in India is unlikely to feature premium features found in the RS4.

In the price sensitive Indian market, where a 250cc Aprilia would have to compete against existing bikes such as KTM 200, Pulsar 200NS, Kawasaki Ninja 250 and Honda CBR250R, an expensive premium quarter liter is unlikely to be launched. Thus, to keep costs down a future 250cc Aprilia could feature a fuel injected, single-cylinder, 4 valve engine with liquid-cooling. Such an engine would deliver power between 25 to 30 BHP.

It is also believed, such a bike would feature front USD forks and fully adjustable rear mono shocks. MotorBeam also says, the bike will make use of perimeter frame.

It should be noted that this still in the rumor stage and of such a bike is indeed being planned it could take at least another year or two to hit the market.
