India Yamaha Motor is all set to export the made in India R15 to Japan. According to news reports coming in, the two wheeler manufacturer is planning to begin exporting the R15 sports bike to Japan with the first consignment containing 300 units.
Yamaha is one of the major two wheeler manufacturers in India and has been exporting the bikes made in India to several countries. But this is for the first time India Yamaha Motor will export bikes made in India to Japan, its parent country.
India Yamaha Motor MD Hiroyaki Suzuki has confirmed this development and has stated: The motorcycles manufactured in India meet the advanced specification of developed markets and they are produced at a lower cost. We are sending R15 to Japan to test market them in the Japanese market and if the response is good, we may explore more products for export to Japan and other advanced markets."
Japan is a mature two wheeler market with buyers preferring advanced, powerful and fast motorcycles. The R15 made in India is a powered down version of the Yamaha R1, the iconic track and sports bike. While big engined motorcycles were the most preferred segment, Yamaha has revealed that the 150cc sports bike segment is opening up in Japan. The R15 is the most ideal bike to start with as it has all the technologies that one would look for in Japan and is affordable too due to the low manufacturing costs of India.
The Yamaha R15's price in India is Rs.1.15 lakhs. Yamaha is considering to sell this bike in Japan with a price tag of Rs2.45 lakh or ¥3.42 lakh. Yamaha is also planning to export the popular FZ series of bikes to Japan if the response to the R15 is good. Yamaha is also considering the FZ for European markets of Portugal, Spain and Turkey.
Motorcycles being exported to other countries from India is not new. Bajaj Auto and TVS are also major exporters along with Yamaha. However, this is the first time motorcycles made in India will be exported to developed markets.
