Women Must Wear Helmets Too: Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court made these observations while hearing a public interest litigation that had asked to make it mandatory for all two wheeler drivers to wear helmets. The Delhi Government had responded that according to Motor Vehicles Rules Sikhs wearing turban and women were exempted from wearing helmets.
The High Court was told that more than 60 women were killed by head injures caused in road accidents. The HC then asked the government to make changes in the Motor Vehicles Rules to ensure the safety of women two wheeler drivers.
The HC has also stated that even pillion riders must be made to wear helmets. Women usually do not prefer to wear helmets as they complain about hair fall and other related issues. But they ignore the fact that they are risking their own lives by not wearing helmets while driving.
The High Court has given the Delhi Government two months time to change the Motor Vehicles Rules and bring women under the ambit of people who are supposed to wear helmets while driving.
