Hero To Develop Own Engines With AVL Help

Many analysts were skeptical about Hero's success as an independent entity without the assistance of Honda. The main concern was the lack of technology in Hero's hands. Hero appears to handling this situation quite intelligently as it has already found an American partner in Eric Buel Racing.
AVL is the world's largest privately owned engine developer. Based in Austria, AVL has been developing and selling engines to several major vehicle manufacturers. Confirming Hero MotorCorp's tie up with AVL, Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO Hero MotoCorp has said his company had forged a strategic partnership with AVL to develop in-house capabilities in engine technologies.
Hero's deal with AVL will help it develop 100cc engines for its best selling models Splendour and Passion. The 150cc bike segment is also expected to get a push with more advanced engines being developed for the CNZ and the Hunk.
Hero's entire line-up of motorcycles are currently powered by Honda engines. Hero pays huge sums in royalty to the Japanese firm to continue using its technology. Hero has been very open in its efforts to develop its own engine technology with or without partners. It is evident that it is taken the second route of developing technology with partners such as Eric Buel racing and AVL.This will mean Hero will soon be independent of Honda's engine technology.
Hero is also looking at options that are beyond its conventional models. It is aiming to develop its Leap hybrid scooter commercially. The Leap scooter was unveiled at the Delhi Auto expo as a concept and Mr Munjal had then said it was developed with the help of a foreign partner. It is yet unclear if this partner was AVL or Eric Buel Racing.
