Honda Surpasses Bajaj In Sales Race
But recent events indicate a huge change in the scenario. Honda is surging ahead with huge paces. It overtook TVS and become the third best selling two wheeler manufacturer in February. While many expected second placed Bajaj Auto was out of harm's way, the March sales proved it was otherwise.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India's March sales have now eclipsed that of long time number two Bajaj Auto. Honda has been growing particularly fast after it left its joint venture with Here. What is noticeable is that Honda's scooter sales have been growing at a fast pace.
Honda's sales for March stand at 2.13 lakh units ahead of Bajaj auto's sales by 2,429 units. Although statistically Honda has gone ahead of Bajaj, Rajiv Bajaj who head Bajaj is not perturbed. He is of the opinion that Bajaj is solely a motorcycle manufacturer and Honda's sales have been due to improved scooter sales. Bajaj does not manufacture scooters anymore.
Moreover, Bajaj has been overtaken by Honda only in the month of March. For the whole fiscal year between April 2011 and March 2012, Bajaj Auto is still the second largest two wheeler manufacturer. Honda can be happy with being the fastest growing two wheeler company in India.
But if volumes are the only consideration of merit, then, Honda could be in the race to overtake Bajaj on a consistent basis in the coming days too. Bajaj is slowly decreasing its focus on the commuter bike segment which offers more sales but less profitability. This has resulted in Bajaj Auto being the most profitable company in the sector. Honda on the other hand is looking to boost volumes and we can say it is currently successful in doing that.
