Yamaha To Launch Scooters In India

Yamaha's scooters are set to zoom on Indian roads soon as the Japanese two-wheeler company famous for building super bikes such as the R1, is planning to launch scooters in the Indian market by 2012. Yamaha India director and chief sales officer Jun Nakata said: "We have a numbers of scooters in other markets like the US and Europe, and currently, we are studying the Indian market. We will launch entry level scooters here soon."

The Yamaha scooters will be manufactured at the bike makers facilities in Surajpur and Faridabad. Yamaha India CEO & MD Hiroyuki Suzuki said the firm would make an investment of $10 million to increase the scooter manufacturing capacity to one million. The bike maker's production capacity in India is currently pegged at five lakh units and was expected to be increased to six lakh units.

Mr Suzuki said the company did not propose to set up a new plant, however, would increase the capacity of its existing ones to one million from the current capacity of half-a-million. Yamaha is expecting to sell 5 lakh bikes in India this year. The company had sold 2.5 lakh bikes in 2010 garnering a market share of 2 per cent. Yamaha's scooters will offer the power and dynamics of a bike while offering the comfort and utility of a scooter.
