Yamaha Targets One Million Sales

Yamaha Motor India is on a roll in India. It has set itself ambitious sales targets for India. The motorcycle manufacturer, a fully owned subsidiary of Yamaha Motors of Japan, will be investing $10 million by 2012 to increase the company's production capacity. Yamaha Motor India CEO and Managing Director Hiroyuki Suzuki said the company wanted to sell one million motorcycles by 2012.

Mr Suzuki also said launching scooters was also part of the company's plan. Yamaha has confident its scooters will help it boost sales and gain market share. Yamaha will launch several top end products as it believes the premium bike segment is doing quite well. It also wants to expand its reach in India by opening showrooms in B and C category cities.

Yamaha Motor India currently has a market share of 14 per cent in the premium bike segment wants to gain a market share of 20 per cent. Mr Suzuki said the YamahaR15 and the FZ series of motorcycles were the best performing products from Yamaha. He also said the motorcycle manufacturer would not ignore entry level models as they were critical for driving sales.

Yamaha currently has two plants in India with a production capacity of 6,00,000 units. Mr Suzuki said the production capacity can be increased to one million units. He also said the company would consider building a third plant in India by the end of this year.

Yamaha Motors also exports its bikes from India. It intends to sell 3,50,000 bikes in India and export 1,50,000 bikes.
