Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India (HMSI), the Indian subsidiary of Japanese two-wheeler major Honda, will be opening its second motorcycle plant in Rajasthan on 1st June. This new plant will help the bike manufacturer bridge the gap between demand and supply in the Indian bike market. Honda Motor Company's CEO Takanobu Ito will be present at the inauguration of the plant.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India is keen to increase two-wheeler production and this can be understood by the fact that it is opening a second motorcycle plant in Rajasthan just after it announced plans to build a third plant in Karnataka. The new Honda plant will focus on building low cost yet high quality bikes.

HMSI's production capacity will increase to2.8 million units once the second motorcycle plant in Rajasthan becomes operational. The company is expected to sell 2.2 million motorcycles this fiscal year. Hero Honda is India's top selling motorcycle company selling about six million units this year, whereas second placed Bajaj Auto is expected to sell 4.5 million bikes.

HMSI is aiming to produce 3.5 million motorcycles in India by 2014 and then increase it to four million bikes and scooters during 2014-15 after commissioning its third plant in Karnataka. Honda is concentrating to boost its presence in India and the country could become its top-selling bike market by overtaking Indonesia and Vietnam. The Indian bike market is the second largest in the world behind China.
