The twist of fortunes hangs on Bajaj Auto with the father and son having different approaches to the relaunch of scooters. While the senior Bajaj wants the foray into the scooters again, the MD Rajiv Bajaj put an end to such speculations. He clarified that the need of the hour is to focus on the global market and not on the revival of scooters. Earlier his father hinted that there might be reentry into the scooter segment to secure 20% market share and earn a marginal share in EBITDA but left the choice to his son. The company had withdrew its scooters from the market in 2009 due to less sale volume and then the MD clearly announced that the company wanted to withstand its position in motorcycles rather on scooters. Much to the contrary, there has been an upsurge in the scooter market courtesy gearless scooters of Honda which occupies the top slot in the segment. During April-January period of this fiscal, the net sale volume in scooter was a rise by 46.57% with 16,97,204 units. The volume for the corresponding period of last fiscal was 1157902 units, said SIAM report.
However, Bajaj Auto made a penetrating entry into the motorcycle range with its Pulsar, Discover and had a good stint with its Austrian partner KTM Power Sports by enjoying 38.09% stake. This is likely to expand further in coming days globally. The JV"s maiden product KTM Duke 125 will roll down in Europe during this year and India will follow suit later this year. Bajaj"s net sale volume during the first nine months of this fiscal stood at 1989377 units in the Indian market which was 1411259 units during the corresponding period of 2010 making a rise of 40.96%. The export volume for the said period stood at 836617 units against 616135 units making a rise of 35.78% for the one year period of 2010 and 2011.
