Bajaj Auto, India's second largest two-wheeler manufacturer has expanded its plant in Pantnagar, Uttarkhand. Reports claim the production capacity of Bajaj's Pantnagar plant has been increased to produce 1,50,000 vehicles per month. Bajaj Auto has so far invested Rs.75 crores for its expansion plans.

A company official on enquiring about Bajaj Auto expanding its Pantnagar plant said: “We have augmented the capacity of our Pantnagar plant to meet future demand as well as optimise the tax."
Bajaj Auto is entitled to tax rebates from the Uttarkhand government and the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC). The CBEC has ruled that the industries in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, which were provided full excise exemption under the hill based incentives, are entitled to expand and introduce new products.

Following the expansion of the Pantnagar plant, Baja Auto will be able to produce 1.8 million vehicles in the plant from the present capacity of 1.2 million vehicles per year. Company officials have refused to clarify if it was planning to build new vehicles in the plant. The Bajaj Discover and the Bajaj Platina motorcycles are being built at the Pantnagar plant.

Bajaj Auto had actually doubled the production capacity of its Pantnagar plant last year from six lakh units to 12 lakh units. The two-wheeler manufacturer expanded its plant ta take advantage of the tax rebates available. Reports say Bajaj's competitors such as Hero Honda are also benefiting from tax rebates in Uttarkhand.
