Yamaha To Launch Cheaper Bikes For Rural Market

A senior official of India Yamaha Motor said: “We have so far seen good sales in urban areas, mainly in the big cities due to our image as a premium bike-maker. Now to further accelerate growth, we will strengthen our presence in the rural markets."
Yamaha has sold 3.8 lakh motorcycles in India in 2010 and is aiming to sell more than 5.2 units this year. The company currently sells the FZ, Fazer, R15, Crux, YBR and the SZ series of motorcycles.
The rural bike market is gaining importance as the ratio of sales generated is slowly increasing. Even carmakers are now looking at rural markets. About 40 per cent of Yamaha's sales in India are generated in rural markets and the company is hoping new showrooms, low priced models and greater visibility will increase sales.
The India Yamaha official said: “Currently, we have around 400 dealers and plan to increase this in the coming days. Our main product, the Yamaha Crux, is well accepted in the rural markets and the YBR 110 also contributes significantly to our sales."
Yamaha is planning to launch newer versions of the Crux with some minor cosmetic changes just to attract rural buyers. This move can be considered as a move by Yamaha to counter the recently launched Bajaj BM Boxer 150. The Boxer has been relaunched as a utility bike that is suitable for rural conditions. Yamaha has said the Crux has a strong demand in the rural markets.
