This Crazy EV That Hops Just Broke The Electric Top Speed Record
Yangwang, BYD's luxury arm, has taken the electric vehicle top speed crown. The Yangwang U9 Track Edition recently recorded a top speed of 472.41 km/h during testing at Germany's ATP proving ground in Papenburg.
The Yangwang U9 Track Edition is powered by four 555 kW motors, one at each wheel. Together, the quad motor setup produces 3,019 horsepower, a figure that comfortably eclipses hyper-EVs like the Rimac Nevera and Lotus Evija.

Compared to the standard U9 launched in 2024, which makes 1,287 hp, the Track Edition represents a colossal jump in output. The upgrades focus on more than power, with significant changes to aerodynamics and stability systems.
The Yangwang U9 Track Edition sports a carbon-fibre roof, a massive fixed rear wing, adjustable aero elements and 20-inch wheels wrapped in 325-section tyres. The aero package is designed to keep the 2.48-tonne machine steady at extreme speeds.

The Yangwan U9 Track Edition's quad motor setup draws power from an 80 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery. The battery pack supports 500 kW DC fast-charging, allowing a charge from 30 to 80 per cent in just 10 minutes.
The U9 Track Edition uses Yangwang's DiSus-X suspension system. This custom system allows extreme body control, including the much-talked-about "hopping" the regular U9 is known for and three-wheel drive tricks, though in the Track Edition, it is tuned firmly for circuit work.

To ensure that the U9 Track Edition had enough grip when blitzing the track at Papenberg, Yangwang worked with Giti Tire to develop a track-focused semi-slick tyre. This high-performance tyre features optimised compound materials and a bespoke tread design, and innovative knurling treatment at the wheel-rim interface. Combined with high-viscosity lubricant, this minimises the relative slippage between the tyre and the rim during hard acceleration or braking and reduces torque loss and tyre wear.
With over 3,000 horsepower, bespoke aerodynamics and a fresh speed record, the Yangwang U9 Track Edition signals just how far Chinese electric hypercars have come in rewriting the performance rulebook. Next time, the Green Hell, maybe, Yangwang?
