World's Largest Jet Engine Screams Into Life - Video

By Dennis

General Electric Aviation have put together the largest jet engine that the world has ever seen.

The GE9X's carbon fibre front fans measure in at 11 feet (3.35m) in diameter and the engine's inlet duct is 18 feet (5.48m) by 12 feet (3.65m) in size. The gigantic engine produces a monstrous 100,000 pounds of thrust.

The GE9X will be used to power the upcoming Boeing 777X series of 'mini jumbo jet' aircraft including the 777-9X which will have the largest wingspan of any aircraft ever at 235 feet, 5 inches (71.8m).

The wings are so large that Boeing have had to fit hinges on the 777-9X's wings to help them fold up so that they can fit into airports.
