The Anti-Corvette Of The Future Sells For $1.15 Million - E-Ray Electrifies Auction

The first-ever Corvette E-Ray to roll off the production line sold for $1.15 million at the Barett-Jackson auction over the weekend. The proceeds of the auction will be donated to the DonorsChoose charity which helps the American education system.

At the same auction, the first production version of the seventh-gen (S650) Mustang also went under the hammer for charity. The new Mustang fetched a sum quite lower than the controversial Corvette with a hammer price of $565,000 which was donated to JDRF.

The new Corvette E-Ray is quite a controversial car as it is viewed by many fans of the American sports car as an affront to the name. There are two interconnected reasons for this amount of disdain from Corvette fanatics.

The Corvette E-Ray sees the All-American sports car brand adopt electrification for the first time. The switch to a hybrid powertrain has also meant that the E-Ray is the first production Corvette to feature all-wheel drive.

However, despite the howls of the yahoos from the Corvette hinterland, the new E-Ray is a decided step forward in the legacy of the Vette before it like the rest of the world has to go fully electric someday in the future.

Instead, people should consider the new Corvette E-Ray as a sports car that follows the footsteps of the Hypercar Holy Trinity from the 2010s. Like the trio of the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder and the Ferrari LaFerrari, the E-Ray uses hybrid tech to boost its power output.

Like the standard C8 Stingray, the E-Ray petrol glugging unit is a 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 that puts out 495bhp and 630Nm of peak torque. The E-Ray adds an electric motor to the front axle which boosts the output all the way up to 655bhp and 807Nm of peak torque.

While the V8 ICE drives the rear wheels with the help of an 8-speed automatic gearbox, the electric motor drives the front wheels alone, which leads to all sorts of fun and slightly nutty things.

While the hybrid tech means that the Corvette E-Ray will go from 0-60 miles/h (0-96.5km/h) in a claimed 2.5 seconds with the standing quarter mile getting over in just 10.5 seconds. This also means that in electric mode, the E-Ray is FWD EV with around 8 kilometres (5 miles) of range.

Thoughts About The Corvette E-Ray

The Corvette E-Ray is a remarkable machine that has raised the hackles of the Corvette purists due to its electrified powertrain. Despite this, the first-ever E-Ray fetching $1.15 million at auction shows the world cars made for fun can also help the world in a different way altogether.
