Comfort: Though SUVs nowadays are very luxurious with numerous techno-wizardry stuff, it is still not enough to beat the basic laws of physics. Thanks to its increased ride height, SUVs have a higher Centre of Gravity which results in more body movement - Making the ride a bit unsettling.
On top of that, SUVs generally have a slightly stiffer suspension setup to control the body movement due to the higher Centre of Gravity and this further compromises the overall ride quality.
Performance: Since SUVs are larger vehicles, they tend to weigh a bit more than sedans and hatchbacks. As a result, the power-to-weight ratio gets affected significantly, which in turn impacts the performance negatively.
Fuel Efficiency: Thanks to its additional weight and less aero-friendly layout, SUVs are generally thirstier than sedans and hatchbacks with similar powertrain setups. This results in increased spending on fuel and the difference amount over a lifetime can be quite significant.
Safety: Though a few studies show that SUVs are safer during a crash, it is also worth mentioning that SUVs are more susceptible to a crash as they have poorer braking performance and do not react well to quick directional changes, both of which are essential to avoid an accident.
Cost of Ownership: Apart from the additional fuel cost, there are other parameters that significantly impact the cost of ownership of SUVs such as higher wear and tear of parts. On top of that, most SUVs come with larger tyres, which may look good but are expensive as well.

In recent years, manufacturers simply slap the SUV tag on their product as long as it has a slightly raised ground clearance and boxier styling. These pseudo SUVs come with all the above demerits and none of the merits of a traditional SUV.
In fact, these pseudo SUVs generally share their underpinnings with a hatchback or a sedan, and most of these "SUVs" come with a front-wheel-drive layout and do not even have a basic all-wheel-drive system.
That being said, traditional SUVs are something to own and admire. Moreover, traditional SUVs start to prove their worth by every penny and more once the tarmac ends and going gets tough.
