Chilling Incident: Child Playing on Road Run Over by Volvo S60
The perilous potential of children playing on the roads was recently highlighted in a shocking incident in Surat, Gujarat, where a Volvo S60 Cross Country driver ran over a young child playing in a quiet residential area. This distressing encounter was caught on camera and has been circulating on social media, highlighting the dangers of children playing on roads and the importance of driver vigilance.
Caught on CCTV, the incident occurred in a narrow lane within the residential Jeevandeep Society of the Katargam region. The footage shows a seven-year-old child playing on the road and sitting down to pick up something. At this point, the Volvo S60 makes a right turn, and the child, most likely, became obscured in the vehicle's blind spot.

The driver, seemingly unaware of the child, didn't stop and proceeded to run over the child. Fortunately, the Volvo S60, with its remarkable ground clearance, passed over the child without causing severe harm, even though the child did sustain injuries to his head and face. The driver, unaware of the mishap, continued without stopping.
The Volvo S60 is equipped with a blindspot monitoring system, but this system is designed to detect vehicles in the rear of the sedan. The blind spots created by the A-pillar often go unnoticed, as was the case in this incident, emphasizing the need for increased care and attention from drivers.
The rear blindspot monitoring system operates by identifying vehicles in the blind spots and alerting the driver. However, there is no equivalent system for the front blind spot zones, a critical area that needs to be addressed by car manufacturers.
An Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) could have played a vital role in preventing this accident. The ADAS, which uses data from radar and cameras, is designed to apply autonomous emergency brakes (AEB) in situations like this. If the Volvo S60 had been equipped with an ADAS, it could have automatically applied the brakes, avoiding the accident entirely by ensuring the child's safety.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety. It is crucial for children to play in designated areas within residential societies and not on roads where there is significant vehicular movement.
Jaywalking is a common issue on Indian roads, with numerous accidents occurring each year due to pedestrians and children crossing the roads without considering the vehicles. Indian motorists, too, need to cultivate safer habits such as slowing down before a zebra crossing. High-speed driving or riding reduces reaction time and increases the risk of accidents.
In conclusion, while technological advancements like ADAS can significantly improve road safety, there is an urgent need for safer driving habits and stricter adherence to road safety rules. Equally important is the need to educate children about the dangers of playing on the roads and to create safer play areas within residential societies.
