Volkswagen Replaces Lawnmowers With 100 Sheep At Its Factory To Cut Costs

Volkswagen has reportedly employed 100 sheep at its Poland manufacturing facility. Despite planning massive layoffs, the German automaker has turned to sheep instead of mechanical lawnmowers as part of a cost-saving and sustainability initiative.

The German auto giant is currently facing financial pressure after losing its biggest car market, China, to domestic brands. The company is also facing increased competition in Europe, especially with Chinese brands expanding into the continent.

Volkswagen Employs 100 Sheep In Poland

To restructure its operations, Volkswagen is planning mass layoffs to cut manufacturing costs and invest more in research and development for future products. There have also been several updates to its manufacturing facilities. Volkswagen's manufacturing plant in Poland has now replaced mechanical lawnmowers with sheep to graze the grass beneath its solar panels.

The facility currently has more than 31,000 solar panels, and instead of using mechanical lawnmowers, the company has brought in a flock of 100 sheep to graze beneath them. This is a natural way of cutting grass while also helping maintain the solar panels and keeping the area clean. This approach also helps reduce soil erosion and improves natural soil fertilisation.

The solar panels were installed at the plant to supply electricity, covering around 25% of its annual electricity requirements. The company is also studying agricultural coexistence, and as part of the project, it has employed 100 sheep to graze beneath the solar panels.

The research process also involves monitoring the sheep and the surrounding environment to determine whether there are improvements in soil quality and biodiversity. This is not the first time the company has adopted such a method to cut grass.

Volkswagen has already carried out similar research and initiatives in the United States as part of its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and emissions. Agrivoltaics is gaining popularity across Europe, where many solar plants are using sheep to graze and manage vegetation.

Traditional lawnmowers are mostly powered by fossil fuels and emit carbon into the atmosphere. Using sheep instead helps improve vegetation management while reducing environmental pollution. Volkswagen is also moving towards green mobility with the brand further planning to introduce more EVs into the market.
