Vehicle Emission Can Turn Good Cholesterol Bad

Furthermore, the scientists also found that inhaling these toxic fumes triggers early cell and tissue ageing, which leads to inflation and hardening of the arteries. The harmful effects are caused due to certain chemicals found in the fumes that react with free radicals and result in oxidation in our body. It is not clear what these chemicals are and how exactly they causes oxidation.
The scientists reached this conclusion upon conducting a test on mice. Mice were divided into three groups. The first set was supplied clean air and the second, vehicle emissions. The third set was also given vehicle emissions for two weeks, after which the air supply was turned clean again for one week.
The results were thus. The group that inhaled only vehicle emission gained all the ill effects mentioned earlier. The more worrying result was found with the group that was switched from emissions to clean air. While they did get the ill effects, even after receiving only clean air for a week the ill effects did not reverse.
"Our research helps confirm that the functionality of HDL may be as important to check as the levels," said study author Dr. Alan Fogelman, executive chair of the department of medicine and director of the atherosclerosis research unit at the Geffen School of Medicine.
"We suggest that people try to limit their exposure to air pollutants, as they may induce damage that starts during the exposure and continues long after it ends," said first author Fen Yin, a researcher in the division of cardiology at the Geffen School of Medicine.
