In India, it's common to see caste or religious stickers on cars. However, in Uttar Pradesh, this practice will now result in fines imposed by the police. Car owners who have these stickers on their vehicles are being fined by the state police.
This action was initiated following orders from the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath. According to a report by Hindustan Times, police authorities have stated that showcasing these stickers and symbols on cars might divert the attention of other drivers and potentially create issues related to law and order.
The report indicates that this effort is not a short-term initiative, and those who violate these rules will face penalties throughout the entire year. The Noida Traffic Police reportedly initiated this campaign on August 11.
Alongside imposing fines on car owners displaying caste and religious stickers, the police are also imposing fines on drivers who use tinted films on their car windows and those who drive without a valid licence.
According to the report, the Noida Traffic Police have already imposed fines on 1,073 individuals for having caste and religion-related stickers on their vehicles, 443 individuals for using dark tinted film on their car windows, and 568 individuals for driving without a valid licence.
As per the Motor Vehicles Act, it is not allowed to place any stickers, messages, or any other items on cars or two-wheelers, including the registration plate. Section 179 (1) of the Motor Vehicles Act makes it illegal to use stickers and writings related to caste and religion on vehicles.
In Uttar Pradesh, individuals placing caste and religious symbols on their cars are being fined Rs 1,000. Vehicles with tinted number plates are subjected to a fine of Rs 5,000.
The first-time penalty for having black film on car windows is Rs 2,500, while a second offence carries a higher fine of Rs 5,000 or more.
