UN And Indian Government To Launch 'Helmet For Hope' Safety Campaign
The Indian government and the United Nations are set to launch campaigns aimed at raising awareness about helmet use in India. The UN has been actively promoting helmet safety in various countries and now plans to introduce a significant campaign in India. Let's delve into the details.
Various measures are being taken worldwide to reduce road accident fatalities. One of the most critical factors is that two-wheeler riders often suffer serious injuries in accidents. Countries globally are working to mitigate this issue.

In this context, UN Secretary-General Jean Daul and Steelbird Helmet's Managing Director Rajiv Kapoor, who also serves as President of the Two-Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association, are planning to launch a helmet awareness campaign called "Helmet for Hope" in different parts of the world.
Phased Implementation and Positive Results
The campaign is being implemented in phases across various countries and has shown positive results. It emphasizes the need for two-wheeler and bicycle riders to wear helmets at all times. Additionally, it educates people about road safety and how to reduce deaths and injuries in accidents.
Campaign Scope and Media Channels
Launched in 2023, the campaign is scheduled to take place in 1000 cities across 80 countries. It will utilize various media channels, including billboards, public transportation advertising, and social media.
The team employs local celebrities in each country to promote their message, making it easier to reach the general public. They also collaborate with non-governmental, non-profit organizations to conduct various helmet awareness campaigns and initiatives.

Corporate Partnerships and Helmet Distribution
The group has partnered with various corporate entities to distribute over one lakh helmets to the public in more than 40 countries. The campaign is currently underway in countries such as Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Vietnam. Plans are underway to launch a campaign in India in collaboration with the central government.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Laws
CSR laws in countries like India are beneficial for such awareness campaigns. Companies like Amazon, Ola, and Uber use two-wheelers for their delivery businesses and are trying to implement rules requiring their drivers to wear helmets.
Impact of Helmet Use
According to a study, wearing a good-quality helmet reduces a two-wheeler rider's risk of dying in an accident by six times and reduces their risk of brain injury by 74%. In India and globally, head injuries are the leading cause of death in two-wheeler accidents.
Global Helmet Laws
Of the 174 countries worldwide, only 54 have laws requiring helmets. Even in countries where such laws exist, a study found that only 47% of people wear helmets correctly. The UN has launched this initiative to raise awareness about helmets based on these statistics.

DriveSpark Thinks
Helmet awareness should be increased in countries like India, where two-wheelers are widely used. In major cities like Chennai, most riders wear helmets. However, awareness is still lacking in other parts of Tamil Nadu. The public needs education on this issue.
