16 Year Olds Hire Luxury Cars For Prom In UK
Tower Hamlets is one of the less well-to-do boroughs in London, UK. The neighbourhood has a significant population of Bangladeshi origin people. The area may not be the most posh in London, but when it comes to luxury cars and supercars, once every year parts of the locality can rival even Monaco.
If you think we are talking about an auto show you would be wrong. Instead, this super car fest is the result of school graduation ceremonies. The National Record of Achievement is the UK equivalent of the US prom. This graduation day or rite of passage event of sorts has 16 year old children taking part in after the end of compulsory schooling period.
In the past 14 to 15 years or so these celebrations have become more elaborate and a new tradition has taken root where the children come to the NRA event in expensive cars. Most families, in fact are not in a financial state to rent luxury cars, but so strong is the urge in the children to impress their friends that they save up for the event for months or even years.
Supercar ‘parade' is now an integral part of the celebrations, where children arrive in rented luxury cars like Land Rovers, Jaguars or even Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Bentleys.
Since the children are not old enough to drive the cars themselves relatives or chauffeurs drive them to the event. Sometimes, when the rent money for an exocitic is too steep, a few get together and pool in money and share a single vehicle. The rent for some brands can be as high as USD 1000. To put that into perspective, the price for a car could he higher than the cost of the apartment they live in.
At the end of the day, after the supercar parade is done and the cars have been flaunted, they ride off to celebrate the rest of the evening in the cars.
According to an Osmani Trust youth and community organization worker, "It [the event] was quite small at that [a decade ago] time, but obviously now it's probably the biggest date on their diaries, including Eid and everything else."
