Toyota Aims For Air Taxis In 2025: Invests $500 Million In Joby Aviation
Toyota has announced an additional $500 million investment in Joby Aviation, a California-based air taxi startup. This funding aims to support Joby's goal of launching commercial operations by late 2025. With this new investment, Toyota's total financial commitment to Joby reaches $894 million.
Investment Details and Future Plans
The latest funding will be provided in two parts, with the first installment arriving in Santa Cruz later this year. The remaining funds are expected in 2025, coinciding with Joby's plans to initiate its electric air taxi services. Toyota has been collaborating with Joby since 2020, and this partnership is crucial for the startup's progress.

Joby has made significant strides toward certification, having completed four of the five necessary steps by August. The company also announced its intention to begin commercial flights in Dubai by late 2025. However, extensive test flights are planned for the first half of next year to ensure readiness.
Industry Competition and Developments
Toyota is not alone in exploring flying taxis. Hyundai showcased its S-A2 air taxi at CES in Las Vegas earlier this year, targeting a production model by 2028. Meanwhile, China's Xpeng X2 eVOTL made its debut flight last year, highlighting the growing interest in electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles.
Stellantis is another automaker expanding into this sector. It recently increased its investment in Archer Aviation by $55 million and plans to produce Archer's Midnight aircraft in Covington, Georgia. The new plant is expected to be operational before the end of 2024.
Progress and Production Expansion
Joby has been working closely with Toyota for nearly seven years as it prepares for its first commercial flights. The third aircraft has already been produced on Joby's pilot line, and efforts are underway to expand production capacity further. This expansion could potentially double their output.

Tetsuo "Ted" Ogawa from Toyota expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: "With this additional investment, we are excited to see Joby certify their aircraft and shift to commercial production." He emphasized that sustainable flight is key to addressing current mobility challenges.
The aviation industry is witnessing increased investments from traditional automakers like Toyota and Stellantis as they explore innovative transportation solutions. These developments indicate a growing interest in sustainable urban mobility options that could reshape future travel dynamics.
