Toyota Fortuner With Plate-Concealing Cover Has 55 Challans Worth Over Rs 1 Lakh

A Toyota Fortuner registered in Maharashtra has gone viral after a video showed a sliding cover concealing its rear number plate while the SUV was in motion. Records shared online show the vehicle, MH14 LN 4888, has 55 traffic challans against it, with fines totalling close to Rs 1 lakh.

The video shows the Fortuner moving normally before a black cover slides down over the registration plate within seconds, blocking it out completely. Viewers online noted the mechanism appeared to be triggered at the push of a button.

X user Nachiket Deshpande shared the vehicle's challan history, sourced from the RTO information platform CarInfo. Of the 55 challans, 50 were for overspeeding at Rs 2,000 each, adding up to Rs 1 lakh. The remaining fines cover a driver seatbelt violation, a passenger seatbelt violation, and an improperly displayed registration mark, at Rs 1,000 each.

Deshpande criticised Pune Police, Pimpri-Chinchwad Police and Maharashtra transport authorities, whom he tagged in his post, for what he called a lack of enforcement against the vehicle. He also flagged the risk that a plate concealed on demand could make the SUV harder to trace in a hit-and-run case.

Other users responded by calling for an investigation into who installed the concealment mechanism, with some arguing a fine alone would not be sufficient. Several also called for the owner's driving licence to be revoked and the vehicle to be impounded. The case has left open the question of how a vehicle with 55 recorded challans and a number plate that can be hidden on demand continued to be driven on public roads.

DriveSpark Thinks!

Fifty overspeeding fines at Rs 2,000 each, sitting unpaid, isn't just an oversight, it's proof the challan system has no teeth once a fine goes unpaid and when the authorities are not willing to follow up. The plate cover is just the next move for a driver who's already worked out that a fine is a cost of doing business, not a consequence. That's the actual story here, not the gadget.
