Here Are A Few Things You Should Not Do With Your Car During Floods

Cyclone Michaung has flooded many parts of Chennai. As such, if you own a car and living in Chennai, here are a few things you should not do with your car during a flood.

Do Not Drive Through Flooded Roads

We highly recommend not to drive your car through flooded roads in your car as hidden potholes and open drainage hidden under the flood water can leave you completely stranded during the flood.

Do Not Drive On Unfamiliar Roads

During monsoon, it is always better to use a familiar road. This is because the condition of the road might be hidden under the flood water. Additionally, if the new road goes through a low-lying area, the chances of water seeping into the engine of your car are even higher.

Avoid Driving On The Edge Of The Road

During floods, it is better to drive the car on the central part of the road as it is not only less susceptible to damage but is also likely to be the higher part of the road.

Do Not Splash Through

While splashing water on a flooded road can be a fun activity for a few people, in reality, the water getting splashed has enough momentum to dislodge the bumper. Moreover, the water splash will deposit more dirt on the underside of the car.

Avoid Sudden Braking

Sudden braking will not only increase the chances of someone hitting your car from the rear but it will also increase the chances of water getting inside the engine. This happens due to the creation of a vacuum inside the engine as revs fall.

Taking Foot Off The Accelerator Pedal

If you are travelling through a flooded road and the water level is above your car's exhaust level, we recommend keeping a light foot on the accelerator pedal even if you are slowing down as falling revs can sip the water from the exhaust pipe.

Do Not Start The Car

The biggest mistake most people make after a flood is to check their car by starting it. We highly recommend towing the car to the nearest mechanic before cranking the engine to avoid further damage to the vehicle.
