Terrafugia Transition Flying Car First Public Flight A Success

Earlier this week visitors to the EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA witnessed an event which will go down in history as the first successful public flight of a modern day, fully functional flying car. That car is the Terrafugia Transition.

You may have already come across the story of the Terrafugia Transition, if not, you may read our previous story. The four wheeled vehicle is a hybrid between a light aircraft and a road going car. Its wings slowly fold up after landing, transitioning into a road legal car.

Terrafugia Transition's first flight was uneventful - which is a good sign. The flying car operated smoothly, taking off after a short run on the runway, circled around in the sky for all to see and landed softly on all four wheels. The driver/pilot also displayed its electric folding wheels and driving capabilities.

This particular model was the second prototype. A third prototype is already in development, hopefully, afterwhich the first production version will follow. It is expected to become available by 2016. Right now the price is pretty steep at $279,000 and interested people have to pay a refundable advance of $10,000. So far 100 people have booked the Terrafugia Transition.

In the future the Terrafugia Transition could even be provided with the capability to carry a motorcycle under its belly.
