Tata Motors To Launch Electric Double Decker Bus Soon - Patents Filed
In the electric bus sector of the country, Switch is the leading player, and they are also known for offering double-decker buses for public transportation. This choice has been deemed the best mobility solution because double-decker buses can accommodate more passengers compared to single-decker buses.
Tata Motors, the biggest commercial vehicle manufacturer in India, is set to enter the electric double-decker bus segment and has filed patents for manufacturing and design within the country. Recently, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) acquired Switch EiV22 Electric Double Decker Buses for transportation services in Mumbai.
Switch transformed their 9-meter single deck bus into a double decker by extensively re-engineering the chassis, suspension, and body. Tata Motors seems to be following a similar approach for its first double-decker electric bus, offering comparable features.
Currently, Tata Motors already offers 9-meter and 12-meter electric buses in its Indian lineup, available in the Ultra, Urban, and Starbus ranges of Tata Buses.These lineups are available in both AC and non-AC variants along with low floor options.
Additionally, the manufacturer provides 400mm low-floor bus variants and 900mm floor height variants. The powertrain options are expected to be similar to Tata Ultra Electric buses, possibly including a large 124kWh battery-pack with a range of 150 km and a top speed of 75 km/h.
The motor will produce 245kW of peak power and 3000Nm of peak torque. Whereas the 12m Starbus houses a 250kWh battery-pack with a range of 200km. Last year, an agreement was signed to buy 1500 buses, stating that Tata will supply, operate and maintain all of these electric buses.
The agreement is in effect for 12 years, and the Starbus model is locally developed, providing excellent features that ensure a comfortable journey. Tata electric buses are getting great acceptance in various places.
