Tamil Nadu Traffic Police Enforce Fines On State-Run Buses For Traffic Violations

Traffic police in Tamil Nadu have started fining state-run buses for traffic violations since yesterday evening. This is unusual, as police typically do not fine government buses even when drivers break traffic rules.

As usual, traffic police penalize vehicles that violate traffic rules. However, government buses are rarely fined, even when drivers break the rules. But since yesterday evening, traffic police across Tamil Nadu have been taking action against government buses violating traffic rules.

In one instance, a government bus parked in a no-parking zone outside the Kelambakkam bus stand in Chennai was fined ₹1,000. In another case, a government bus entering a no-entry zone in Erode was fined ₹500. Similarly, traffic police have fined over 12 government buses in various locations in a single day.

This sudden action by traffic police has surprised many. When asked about the reason behind this, it was revealed that a few days ago, a police officer boarded a government bus from Thoothukudi to Nagercoil without purchasing a ticket.

He had an argument with the conductor, which the conductor recorded on his phone and shared on social media. This video went viral, leading to the officer's suspension and an investigation.

Now, transport department employees allege that the police are retaliating by fining government buses. According to regulations, police officers can only travel free on government buses with a warrant for official duty. Otherwise, they must pay for a ticket.

Impact on Drivers and Government

Following the viral video, traffic police have started taking action against government buses. This could affect the drivers' reputation as they are directly responsible for operating these buses. The state government will have to pay the fines imposed on these buses.

However, if a government bus driver violates traffic rules, it could affect their job. In such cases, it's important for both government bus drivers and police officers to follow traffic rules.

DriveSpark Thinks

Police should not take revenge on government bus drivers for the ticket-related incident. They should genuinely penalize all vehicles that violate traffic rules. At the same time, all passengers, including police officers, should purchase tickets when traveling on buses. If both groups understand this, everything will run smoothly.
