Tamil Nadu's Green Shift: Introduction Of CNG And LNG Buses
Tamil Nadu's transport minister, S. S. Sivasankar inaugurated six buses retrofitted with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquied Natural Gas (NG) engines on Thursday. Of these, four LNG buses will operate in Chennai, while two will serve Ramanathapuram. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will run two buses on route 553W (Saidapet-Sriperumbudur).
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Villupuram will operate two buses on the Kancheepuram-Poonamallee route. This rollout marks the pilot phase of the initiative, which will extend across the state. The aim is to ensure each of the seven transport corporations in Tamil Nadu has at least two LNG or CNG buses.
These LNG and CNG buses are expected to cut fuel costs by 7% to 20% and emit less carbon. Minister Sivasankar stated that the state government procured 1,000 of the 2,000 new buses funded last year, with efforts underway to launch the remaining buses soon.
Tenders have been floated to procure 5,700 new buses. "By the end of this year, we will ensure that around 7,700 new government buses will be operational, replacing old buses," Sivasankar stated. This fleet upgrade includes 100 new electric buses for Chennai.
The minister addressed concerns about passenger safety in older buses, noting the Centre permits buses up to 15 years old to operate. He emphasized that all buses undergo thorough checks of engines, brakes, and other components before deployment.
At the inauguration event, Sivasankar also distributed appointment orders to 49 employees recruited by MTC on compassionate grounds. These new hires mark the fifth round of appointments aimed at reducing the shortage of drivers.

The initiative represents a significant step towards modernising Tamil Nadu's public transport system, enhancing economic efficiency, and reducing environmental impact.
