Tamil Nadu Bans Unauthorized Omni Buses: Tackling Safety Issues
The Tamil Nadu government has announced a new regulation that will ban omni buses registered in other states from operating within Tamil Nadu without proper authorization starting from the 14th of this month. This decision has caused concern among omni bus owners. The issue was previously discussed in depth, and the government has now decided to take action.
Omni bus services are widely used across Tamil Nadu, with several private companies providing these services. While most omni buses operating in the state are registered locally, some are registered in other states, including several from northeastern regions. These out-of-state registrations are considered unauthorized.
One significant issue with these unauthorized buses is that passengers face difficulties in claiming insurance when accidents occur. The Tamil Nadu government had issued a notification a few months ago addressing this problem.
According to the notification, buses registered in other states must cancel their registration and re-register in Tamil Nadu within a specified timeframe.

Although the deadline was extended, the government has now mandated that all omni buses operating in Tamil Nadu from the 14th of this month must be registered locally or have proper authorization. Buses registered in other states should not operate within Tamil Nadu unless they meet specific exceptions.
There are some exceptions to this rule. Companies providing services from Tamil Nadu to other states can use vehicles registered in the destination state. For instance, if an omni bus operates from Chennai to Bangalore, it must be registered in Bangalore, which is permissible.
However, companies that have registered their vehicles in other states but provide services solely within Tamil Nadu must re-register their vehicles locally. Most companies have complied with this rule and switched to vehicles registered in Tamil Nadu. Nevertheless, a few companies continue to use vehicles with out-of-state registration numbers.
The Tamil Nadu government has advised the public to verify the registration of omni buses before booking tickets. Passengers face difficulties in obtaining insurance in case of accidents when traveling on buses registered outside Tamil Nadu.
It has also been clarified that buses registered in other states can be used for tour services within Tamil Nadu if the entire bus is booked by a single person for tour purposes. However, it is illegal to operate such buses by selling tickets at each stage of the journey.

The public should ensure that they book tickets only on legally compliant buses. Avoiding illegally operating buses will help passengers avoid potential issues related to insurance claims and safety regulations.
