Stellantis To Consider Relaunching Fiat In Indian Market - Most Awaited Comeback?
Fiat's initial foray into India was marked by the launch of the Premier Padmini, a car that soon became a symbol of the Indian middle-class. Its sturdy build and reliable performance earned it a special place in the hearts of many.
However, as time passed, Fiat faced challenges in keeping up with the evolving Indian market and competition. In the early 2000s, Fiat entered into a joint venture with Tata Motors, aiming to regain its foothold.

This partnership brought forth new models like the Fiat Palio and Fiat Linea, which showcased the brand's commitment to innovative design and engineering. Yet, despite their appeal, Fiat struggled to match the popularity of its competitors.
Recent news suggests that Stellantis, the company responsible for Jeep and Citroen in India, might use its STLA Medium (M) platform to reintroduce Fiat in India. This platform, which was introduced last month, is expected to come to India in 2026 with the next-gen Jeep Compass and Citroen's new models.
Stellantis is putting a lot of focus on the STLA M platform, which will be used for Fiat vehicles as well. Therefore, since there's a platform available for Jeep and Citroen in India, it makes sense for Fiat to introduce its own-models using the same platform without breaking the bank.

The STLA M is the initial among the four global platforms, primarily designed for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which will be used in various upcoming models from different Stellantis brands.
This platform is adaptable, meaning it can be the foundation for a wide range of vehicles, varying in size from about 4.3 metres to 4.9 metres, typically falling within the C- and D-segments. These vehicles will have wheelbases ranging from 2.7 metres to 2.9 metres.
Vehicles built using this platform can have front-wheel, rear-wheel, or all-wheel drive (AWD) systems, with AWD versions featuring two motors. The power of these vehicles will vary between 215bhp and 382bhp, and the battery capacity could be as large as 98kWh, offering a range of over 700km.
The platform's adaptability permits different types of vehicle designs, such as sedans, crossovers, and SUVs. It's been created to reduce weight and enhance the driving experience, which is a step ahead of the older PSA and FCA platforms that currently form the foundation of many Stellantis vehicles.
Even though the all new STLA M platform is primarily made for electric models, its flexibility also allows it to build traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrains of various capacities.
Back then, Fiat needed investments to develop a completely new lineup of vehicles and a new set of engines. Although this didn't happen back then, Stellantis now has the chance to achieve just that using the STLA M platform.
Stellantis is reportedly looking into whether it makes sense to bring back the Fiat to India. The company currently has three manufacturing plants in India - Hosur, Ranjangaon, and Thiruvallur. It's yet to be seen how they manage production for the new STLA M vehicles considering these plants.
Thoughts On Stellantis Bringing Back Fiat To India
Opinions about Stellantis bringing back Fiat to India will be varied. Some might see this move as a positive step, considering Fiat's history and reputation in the Indian market. It could provide consumers with more choices and add diversity to the automotive landscape. However, there are challenges too.
