Revolutionizing Bengaluru's Urban Mobility: SWR's Ambitious Circular Rail Network Plan

In a bid to revolutionize the urban mobility landscape, South Western Railway (SWR) recently announced its ambitious plan to build a 287km circular rail network on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

The current proposed project aims to augment local train services, alleviate the load on current rail systems, and integrate seamlessly with the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) and Namma Metro.

Green Light For Final Location Survey

Sanjeev Kishore, the General Manager of SWR, confirmed to TOI that the Ministry of Railways has given the go-ahead for the Final Location Survey for the proposed double-line circular rail network.

The Final Location Survey (FLS), estimated to cost Rs 7.2 crore, shall cover surveying alignments, station mapping, yard plans, terminal facilities, land requirements, and civil structures like bridges and other structures.

Revolutionizing Urban Mobility

With the circular rail network, SWR plans to connect key areas including Nidvanda, Doddaballapur, Devanahalli, Malur, Heelalige, Solur, and Nidvanda. This extensive network will encircle Bengaluru, aiming to strengthen the city's rail capacity, ease congestion, and cater to future demands.

Dedicated trains will operate on the 287km line in both directions, reducing strain on the existing rail networks and improving travel for commuters from satellite towns to Bengaluru.

Addressing Congestion & Enhancing Connectivity

The proposed project is designed not only to cater to passenger travel but also to facilitate the movement of goods trains from the Salem line to the Mysuru line and vice versa. By diverting goods trains during off-peak passenger service hours, the plan will alleviate city congestion.

To further ease congestion, a peripheral line connecting Hejjala and Heelalige has been proposed. In tandem with these developments, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is planning to operationalize Namma Metro, which will span 175km by 2025 and expand to 314km by 2040.

In conclusion, the proposed circular rail network by SWR is a game-changer for Bengaluru's urban mobility. By synergizing with the BSRP and Namma Metro, and offering dedicated services for both passengers and goods trains, it promises to significantly enhance the city's rail capacity and connectivity, while easing congestion.
